The total cost of getting certified as a bookkeeper

No comparison-farm listicle publishes a dated, line-item, all-in cost across all four bookkeeping-adjacent credentials. Here is what is confirmed so far, and what is still pending, dated 2026-07-30 against each body’s own page.

AIPB Certified Bookkeeper (CB)

AIPB’s own “Cost of Certification” table, in its Self-Study Handbook, totals the self-study path at $479 for members and $574 for nonmembers: $25/$60 enrollment, $254/$314 for six self-study workbooks, plus $200 flat in Prometric test fees (the same whether or not you are a member). Membership is optional and actually lowers your total cost: $39/year at AIPB’s current promotional rate (normally $60), which drops the all-in first-year price to $479, below the $574 nonmember path. A pricier, guided 99-Hour Prep Course alternative is also sold at $1,495 (registration, six workbooks, and prepaid Prometric fees included), but it is an optional, guided study path, not a required second cost. Retaining the designation afterward requires 60 CPE credits every 3 years, at a $3-per-credit registration fee if paid: a $180 maximum across 3 years, so the 3-year all-in total is $574 (or $479 if you join) plus up to $180, roughly $754 at the upper bound.

NACPB Certified Public Bookkeeper (CPB)

Two numbers are easy to conflate here, and confusing them is a common mistake. NACPB’s standalone Bookkeeping Certification exam, a prerequisite step, costs $80 (member) or $100 (nonmember), with a $40/$50 retake, but passing it is not the same as holding the CPB license. The license itself is earned by completing NACPB’s full Certified Public Bookkeeper Program, a structured 12-month Consortia Accounting School curriculum priced at $500/month for 12 months ($6,000 total) or $5,400 if prepaid (a 10% discount). A separate “CPB License Bundle” (courses plus the Bookkeeping Certification and QuickBooks Certification, but not the supervised experience) is priced at $719 (subscriber) or $898 (nonsubscriber), though whether that bundle alone qualifies a candidate for the license without separately arranging the supervised experience step is not stated on NACPB’s public pages. Membership costs $100/year and includes a 20% discount on CPB licensing, license renewal, and CPE. Once licensed, NACPB requires 24 hours of CPE annually and an Annual Application for License Renewal, but the dollar cost of that CPE is not published.

Intuit Academy Bookkeeping Professional Certificate

No separate exam fee. Cost is a Coursera subscription at $39/month (7-day free trial), and Coursera states most learners finish the 4-course, 54-hour program in about 4 months, for a typical total of roughly $160. This is a one-time badge with no recurring renewal cost.

QuickBooks Online (QBO) ProAdvisor certification

This site’s verification pass confirms quickbooks.intuit.com/accountants/ is reachable, but the ProAdvisor certification exam itself sits behind a free QuickBooks Online Accountant (Intuit is rebranding this to “Intuit Accountant Suite”) account login, so its cost, if any, is not published on a page this site can cite. Operator domain knowledge is that this certification is free with that login, but this site will not print that as a confirmed number until it is verified directly. A worked 3-year total for each confirmed path

Stretching each credential’s cost across 3 years, to make the recertification cadence comparable, changes the ranking less than it might seem but adds useful context. AIPB’s CB: $574 (nonmember, self-study) plus up to $180 in CPEC registration fees across the 3-year renewal cycle, for a 3-year ceiling of $754. NACPB’s CPB: $5,400 to $6,000 up front, plus 3 years of 24-hour annual CPE and 3 annual license-renewal applications, both at an unpublished dollar cost, so the true 3-year total is higher than $5,400 to $6,000 by an unknown but nonzero margin. Intuit Academy: roughly $160 one time, with no stated recertification requirement, so its 3-year total is the same $160 unless Intuit changes the program’s pricing or structure. QBO ProAdvisor’s 3-year total remains unconfirmed for the same reason its first-year cost is: the exam sits behind an account login this site has not yet verified from the inside.

The honest total-cost takeaway

By confirmed first-year all-in cost, lowest to highest: Intuit Academy is lowest and most predictable (around $160, one time, no renewal). AIPB’s CB comes next ($479 member to $574 nonmember, plus up to $180 more over 3 years to retain it). NACPB’s CPB is the most expensive of the three this site has full pricing for by a wide margin ($5,400 to $6,000 for the full Program that actually earns the license, not the $80/$100 prerequisite exam alone, which is easy to mistake for the whole cost). None of these numbers include the time cost of the underlying study, which is often the larger real cost, especially for NACPB’s fixed 12-month curriculum.
